Curly wedding hair and why I love it

Guess what? March is now (un)officailly Curly Hair Month! Well it is here and across all my social media. This month I'm taking a dive into all things curls, why I started curly hair styling, how to get the most from your curls and lots of other bits that might help with your curly event hair.

"I was born with curly hair. It fits my personality, and it's totally who I am. I am rough around the edges, and I am not a polished girl."— Erin Wasson

This quote sums up why I love working with curly hair. You don’t call the shots with curls. You listen. You do what they tell you. Curly hair exists on its own terms, and my job is to help it become the best version of itself - not fight against it. Although if you did want a more polished curl give me a call.

I grew up surrounded by curly hair. My Cypriot family has some of the most beautiful curl patterns you’ve ever seen, from kinky curls to corkscrew and waves they're a gifted bunch! After about 40 years of heat styling, straightening and - I'm sure she won't mind me saying - hair disasters, my mum realized she had amazing curly hair. And me? I didn’t get the corkscrew curls I always wanted. But in a way, that longing for hair I never had led may have lead me to this job. I might not have the curls myself, but I get to work with them, style them, celebrate them, and call it my job. I guess I'm pretty lucky.

The Wedding Industry Wants You to Change. I Don’t.

Let's be real the wedding industry is a toxic place. It’s built on the idea that your current hair, weight, skin tone, face, and body aren’t good enough and all need to be “perfected” for one day.

Firstly, how stupid do they think we are? Why would we change everything about ourselves for a single day?

It’s easy for me to sit here and type this, but the reality is different. The pressure is still there, and blocking out the noise about "perfection" is hard.

But here’s the good news. If you already feel comfortable in your curls, it’s an easy decision to wear them naturally on your wedding day. Because you know if you straighten them or change your curl pattern too much, you won’t feel like yourself.

My Job is Simple: Make Your Curls Work for You

A recent client of mine told me "this is the first time someone has styled my hair and I've actually liked it" That fucking moved me, I physically felt those words hit me in the chest because all I've ever wanted is to create a space for everyone to exist just as the are and if possible do more than just exist - be celebrated.

"this is the first time someone has styled my hair and I've actually liked it"

I'm so glad that curly haired people trust me with their curls becuase i couldn't imagine doing anything else.

You already have beautiful hair. My job is to style it in a way that works perfectly for your wedding. That’s it. No forcing it into something it’s not. No pretending it needs fixing.

Curly hair is already bridal hair. If you’re ready to celebrate it, I’d love to help.

Come back next week because I'll banging on about curly hair myths that need to die. If you want to chat to me about this post or cats or pizza - or anything really, find me procrastinating on Instagram.

Bye for now
